My name is Lorraine Ruchalski and I’m a family nurse practitioner. I graduated from Monmouth University, West Long Branch-NJ and I’m currently employed by Kennedy Health Alliance, Cherry Hill- NJ and my true desire is to continue furthering my education, and complete a Doctorate in Nursing.

To say that nursing is my passion is an understatement. I’ve been a nurse for 7 years and even on the toughest days I have never regretted my decision to become a nurse.

Being a nurse in the operating room, where I practiced for most of my RN career, required me to have quick action, critical thinking and lots of emergency response knowledge. Critical patients would come for surgery, and within seconds things would go from smooth and quiet operation, to grabbing the crash cart , applying defibrilator pads and starting CPR. I’m a true believer that practice makes perfect and for that I believe that every student, nurse, medical student should have an opportunity to be present in a real life situation and experience the importance of knowing how to perform effective CPR. Appropriate and correct CPR skills saves lives.

I knew back when I first achieved my associates degree in nursing I wanted to be a nurse practitioner, my professors were so inspiring I wanted to be like them, I wanted to have all that knowledge, I wanted to know all the answers to the problems, I wanted to know the diagnosis, the cure, I knew I wanted to heal others, and I still do.

I also know that knowledge never ends and that’s why I continue to seek programs that keep me updated with the most current guidelines of treatments and research that shows data to help me improve my practice.

Being a mother and provider, and attending school at the same time can be challenging at times. The burdens of financially affording tuition can be overwhelming, but that doesn’t scare away my dream to finish my doctorate degree. In this circumstance I search for opportunities such as this scholarship to help me afford the tuition costs since at this time my employer does not offer tuition reimbursement.
