My name is Douglas Jenkin, and I am an BSN nursing student at Presentation College set to graduate in May of 2024. I am originally from Wisconsin Rapids; a small town in Wisconsin and I grew up with a passion of taking care of others. Since middle school, I’ve always anticipated a career in healthcare. I would volunteer my summers at the assisted living home my mother worked at. I would spend my time with the residents playing games, talking with them, and getting to know them. I learned so much from watching my mother while she worked there. This experience awoke a passion for meeting the needs of others through the provision of healthcare. All through high school I knew that becoming a nurse was my goal. I currently work as a medical assistant in both an orthopedic clinic and an ER at my local hospital on top of being in nursing school. I am passionate about critical care and the exceptional patient-centered experience you can provide to critically ill patients and their families in some of their most scary and difficult moments. I have spent time working in the ER during COVID as well and feel so privileged to serve on the front lines of this pandemic. My hope is to gain acceptance into a critical care nurse residency program and ultimately to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).
Between both my jobs, I typically work 40-60 hours/week. Working has been enough to help get me by with rent, bills, and groceries. I don’t have the option to ask family for assistance because I know they don’t have extra money to assist in my education as my parents are on a fixed income due to being retired. Receiving any sort of financial help would really help alleviate my financial situation and so I do not have to drop out of school.
